Teeth extractions are performed when one or more teeth need to be removed. There are many cases where removing a tooth is in the best interest of the patient’s oral health. This can include cases where a tooth is irreversibly damaged, when a tooth is causing severe issues for other teeth or when the patient has suffered a severe oral injury. Our practice offers both standard teeth extractions and wisdom teeth extractions. We use sedation dentistry to make your experience as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

How are Teeth Extractions Performed?

Teeth extractions are performed by following a careful process. We start by taking digital X-rays to determine the safest method to remove the tooth. We then administer sedation to reduce any patient pain and discomfort. Depending on the situation, we may be able to simply pull the tooth from the socket. Other teeth may need to be cut into small pieces prior to their removal. In most cases, a tooth can be removed in a matter of seconds.

Are Teeth Extractions Painful?

Teeth extractions feature minimal pain and discomfort. We use sedation dentistry to keep any pain and discomfort to a minimum. This medicine will be administered shortly prior to treatment. Our practice offers support for local anesthesia, oral sedation, IV sedation and laughing gas. The method of sedation that is used will depend on the unique needs of the patient.

Why are Teeth Extractions Performed?

Teeth extractions are performed to help patients regain their oral health. Although removing a permanent tooth might seem counterintuitive, there are many situations where this is in the patient’s best interest. For example, removing a tooth can help alleviate crowding. A tooth extraction procedure may also be performed when a patient has very poor oral health or when a tooth is too severely injured to be properly salvaged.

What Can I Expect During a Tooth Extraction?

The tooth extraction process starts by taking digital X-rays and administering sedation. Any additional prep-work is completed, and the tooth is carefully removed from its socket. The patient will then need to immediately bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes. This will allow a blood clot to form in the area. The patient must then take great care to avoid disrupting the blood clot. This means that the patient should not use a straw, consume drugs or alcohol, chew tough foods or participate in rigorous exercise for at least 24 hours following a tooth extraction. It will normally take the patient a few days to recover from a tooth extraction.

What Should I Do During Recovery?

The best way to recover from a tooth extraction is to get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids. You should avoid any tough or chewy foods. An ice pack can help reduce swelling. You can apply a warm compress for comfort once the swelling has subsided. Recovery will take a few days.
